The project is finally ready to enter into the data collection stage as the application to the ethics boards from both the University of British Columbia (UBC) and Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) is complete.
The project team is now working to review and finalize all documents to begin our data collection process.
Research Methods
The research methods for this study include a survey and semi-structured interviews.
Phase 1 – Survey
The survey study population will be faculty, staff, students, and community involvement in the creation of Canadian Indigenous OER in higher education. The survey will provide data related to the breadth of
Canadian Indigenous OER development, support models, the role of the Indigenous community in the creation/support process, and provide an overview of barriers to OER development in this space.
Our hope is to begin Phase 1 of the data collection process on October 1, 2023.
Phase 2 – Interviews
The semi-structured interview population will be Indigenous self-identifying faculty, teaching, and learning staff, Indigenous student and faculty services, and librarians at universities and/or colleges in Canada. Interview participants are required to have been either engaged in or supported teaching and learning in some way on their campuses. The semi-structured interviews will provide the opportunity to collect data specifically from Indigenous identifying individuals on principles, practices, and processes of OER that support, benefit, and potentially run counter to Indigenous ways of knowing, knowledge translation, and sharing practices. The interview methodology will allow for structuring specific questions the study will need to investigate while allowing the flexibility to probe thematic areas that arise during the interviews.
Our hope is to begin Phase 2 of the data collection process in January 2024.
